New work, eclectic mix!

This is some work I did for a charity auction for my company. They are a limited print run and after the first print of each is sold the remaining prints can be bought from me if anyone is interested. Just get in touch for more info.
So first up is a pin up style portrait of Marilyn Monroe. I used reference and then 'cheesecaked' it up a bit. All drawn and painted in Photoshop.

The next piece I decided to do the equally ever-popular Audrey Hepburn, this time in a sort of pop art poster style. Again all done straight in Photoshop.

And the final piece is called 'Vegas Baby!' after the city where I grew up! I drew this in pencil first, scanned it in and did some colouring in Photoshop.
Hope they raise some money for a good cause and that you like 'em. :)

Broken Sword Complete

I noticed recently that a new 'complete' version of Broken Sword has been released on PC. It uses a cover that is a mishmash of various covers including my original painting of the Angel of Death. I prefer my original, but the release version was different in various regions. Above was one of my versions.

This is one of the original images I painted to be used on the cover.

And this is the new cover using the Angel of Death... I know which one I prefer. :)

Ol' Sleazy T-shirt design

This is an idea I had for a T-shirt design that helped me practice my ink skills. The character Ol' Sleazy himself is a lampoon on the type of seedy guys that keep on partying way longer then they should. Basically a horrible old codger.

Done entirely in photoshop no reference except for the hands.

Ink style experiments

I've been meaning to explore a more harder edged pen and ink inspired look that I've seen other artists do and have admired tremendously. Kind of Banksyesque and vaguely political too. Love the simplicity of colour, but intricacy of the inks.

The first piece is like some left wing fashion propaganda poster and the second piece is called 'Lyin King' and is a commentary on our useless greedy banker/business types.

Going to do these as posters and maybe t-shirts too.

I'll be doing some more of this type of work to get it out of my system :)

I wanted to try and do a painting that told a little bit about the character of the person in the piece. So here I wanted to do a piece that showed an obviously tough, alternative type of girl that also has some vulnerability. Someone who had a tough life, no breaks, but deep down is good type of thing. I think watching Gemma Teller in Sons of Anarchy probably had something to do with it...

I also gave her some Irish/Celtic type tats to suggest her Irish-American heritage. ;)

All done in Photoshop, no reference, about 8 hours or so.

Tokyo Reign

Bladerunner is one of my favourite films and I've always loved the whole cyberpunk thing... which got me wondering. Did other cities besides LA have Bladerunners? If so, here's Tokyo's version!

Did this in Photoshop in a few of my lunch breaks, so about 4 hours total. Hope you like.

For those that wonder how I work... this is how this sketch evolved into the last stage albeit by a large leap into the final piece! :)

This is a pic that I had a version of for quite a while and finally decided to put some more colour work into it while still keeping it relatively sketchy and painterly. The subject matter is yet again a fantasy type of thing which is less and less popular I think, but is something I find fun to do. Reading Tolkien as a kid definitely had a profound effect on me.

Druantia - Celtic Goddess of creativity! ... and trees and sex apparently. I actually did this to try a style and look that felt like an old book illustration. Trying some new brushes and a few new techniques I've come up with. As usual no reference, all from memory which is the most fun anyway :) All done entirely in Photoshop. Was thinking of maybe doing a series of them, maybe even a calendar...

Childhood Heroes - The Movie

This is a post I did for the Collective Thinking Blog whose theme this month was 'Childhood Heroes'. Knowing that I had quite a few I decided to do a montage and since I'm a huge Drew Struzan fan I thought I'd do it as a homage to him too.
Time was a little tight in the end so some of my heroes didn't quite make it, but the ones that did were such a font of imagination and fun in my childhood.

Carmen Sandiego - Early concepts and character design

I've been Concept and Art Lead on the new Carmen Sandiego game that my company has been working on and as the release is imminent I've been given permission to upload some of the early concept work that as ever has changed over time before becoming the finished product. As it's aimed at a relatively young market the design couldn't be too edgy so we've gone with a more neutral approach.

Really enjoyed this project and there's more to follow!

Victorian doodles

These are a few doodles I did while on a call at work when the conversation turns to something unrelated to my input, but I still need to monitor. Perfect time to doodle!

Started with the guy with the white hair and gave him some old Victorian clothing which informed all the others. I see them as all being part of some bigger story.

Maybe I'll flesh it out some day.

These are some really quick and loose sketches I did to test my straight to paper with marker skills. It's not something I really do, but I want to be good at using markers and improve my inks. Convention sketches type of vibe. No reference as ever, and no real rhyme. The middle pic looks like a movie poster montage type of thing, but it's actually just a strange assortment of images.

Hellguard Concept - Joe the Janitor

Here's a really quick concept I did for friend, colleague and all round good guy Viv Duignan for his comicbook Joe the Janitor. The basic concept of the comic is that Joseph Stalin has been kicked out of hell and is sent back to earth as a lowly janitor. For more info check out Viv's blog in my links section.
The hellguard themselves are sort of 'anti-pope' type of characters. Was fun to do.

Dinosaurs - Velocirapper

I've just become part of a blog of fellow Irish artists called Collective Thinking (see my links). Basically they come up with a different theme every month and you can draw, paint, do a comic strip or even write a poem about the given subject.
This month's theme was Dinosaurs and I think it's the first one I've ever done, well... almost did as I soon played around with it and turned into Velocirapper!

I originally did a version of this a while ago and really half-assed it and wasn't happy with it at all, but as I often do I tried to see if I could salvage it and make it look 'presentable' at least.

Overpainting test

This is a picture that I did to show the technique of overpainting. Basically it involves using a greyscale 3D image that can quickly provide perspective, basic lighting, etc... and painting over it in Photoshop to see what works as far as detailed lighting, atmosphere, colour, texure, etc... This can provide really quick and cool results.

Thanks to my talented colleague Viv Duignan for the 3D scene!

All in all the overpainting took about 1.5 hours.

Virtua Tennis 2009

When I worked on Virtua Tennis 2009, I was mostly doing environmental concept art which was a bit of a departure as I mostly did character stuff. Anyway this was a concept I did for a tennis court that was meant to be situated on the top of a large skyscraper in Dubai.

I thought that if I did the piece as a sort of sequential showing the skyscraper from distance and then closer up until you see the actual court would work better.

I used some photo work in this, but it was about 20 percent compared to 80 percent drawing.

Quite enjoyed it!
